Corner Brook -
The Matthew Hunt rink made sure they'll be included in any conversation regarding potential winners of the 2009 Newfoundland and Labrador Curling Association Junior Men's Championship with a strong effort on Monday.
Hunt, along with rinkmates Tyler Brown, Brandon Gillespie, Michael Dawe and Lenny Tiller, won both their games at the Re/Max Centre in St. John's to lift the Corner Brook Curling Club representative into a three-way second-place tie at 3-1.
A 12-9 victory in 10 ends over John Sheppard of St. John's capped off the second day of the tournament for Hunt and company. Two points in the 10th end was enough to seal the deal.
Earlier, Hunt posted a 9-6 win against St. John's skip Scott Henderson, which also went 10 ends and saw Hunt pick up five points in the final three ends to escape with the victory.
Hunt's next action will come against Matthew Noseworthy (1-3) and Ryan Withycombe (3-1) today.
Meanwhile, the Junior Women's bracket began on Monday, with Caribou Curling Club representative Amanda Rumboldt and her rink, featuring Ashley Rumboldt, Chloe Deaves and Bronwyn Woolfrey, winning one and losing one.
A 15-1 trouncing of St. John's Curling Club's Sarah Ford was definitely the highlight for Rumboldt, a matchup in which Ford conceded after six ends.
In her opening game, Rumboldt was edged 8-6 in 10 ends by Carolyn Sulley of the Bally Haly Curling Club in St. John's.
Her 1-1 record leaves her in a tie for second place, with games against St. John's skips Jen Cunningham (2-0) and Erin Porter (0-2) on tap for today.
