CORNER BROOK — Wayne Bennett believes the Crown corporation Marine Atlantic is unable to deal the problems he sees in the service and the only way to fix it may be to take it to the private sector.

Over the last number of weeks the service has been off schedule a number of times and it is facing a lot of criticism from those in the trucking industry who say the new reservation system is hurting business. The system has been protested and there is talk of another protest in the works.

Bennett, the leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador First Party, says a recent trip across the Gulf only served to further convince him the ferry service needs to be operated by a private company.

Of chief concern for him is the apparent lack of communication with ferry travellers or its own staff, especially when things go wrong.

“Somebody in the organization knows there’s something wrong, but it’s not being communicated to the people on the front lines,” Bennett said.

He said the information is not being made available to passengers, either. Bennett believes there’s got to be a way to inform passengers of what’s happening during delays, or when the schedule is running smoothly.

He also noted there are more ways to communicate the message than using a loudspeaker.

“We’re all going around with cellphones, BlackBerrys or iPods,” he said. “You can send us a message, you can send us a tweet. There’s all kinds of ways.”

He said the people supervising the toll gates and parking lots are hearing the complaints, but management isn’t visible to the travelling public.

“I say privatize it because it’s a government organization and it smacks of being government-run,” he said. “I think a lot of the problems they’re having sometimes deal with unions ... Maybe a private operator will come in, get rid of the unions and get things back on an even keel. I think it’s a drastic step, but sometimes drastic measures are what’s needed.”

If that doesn’t work, he thinks both levels of government should look at some sort of fixed link. Then, he says, there won’t be the worry of being limited by the ferry system.

''We'' didn't allow then to get rid of the railway. Brian Peckford and John Crosbie got rid of the railway. ''We'' had no say in the matter.

As painful a turning point as it was, Mark, the railway was just not being used nearly enough to pay for itself. It became a black hole for money. The decision was one of the many "damned if you do, damned if you don't" choices leaders face. I think the boys did the right thing in the long run. The follow-up the the end of the railway just wasn't much of a payback. "The gravy train don't go past here no more. They even came and took the tracks!"

No need to privatize it...just hold it to reasonable accountability standards. The problem with government-run anything is the absolute lack of accountability...simply start firing incompetent, disinterested staff, including senior management, and watch how much better things would get. It's high time you faced the realities of this planet, folks.

Make no wonder the Newfoundland and Labrador First Party is a political joke. Yes, lets privatize a monopoly and let the only entrance to the province charge whatever fees they want. Great idea. The Feds already subsidize the operation millions of dollars now, imagine what the fares would be without that input. Don't get me wrong, I have issues with Marine Atlantic like everyone else and I do agree that some drastic measures need to be taken, but privatizing the service and letting the Feds out of their constitutional obligation isn't the solution. Sure, I'm willing to bet that's exactly the response they are looking for. And if you're still convinced privatization is the way, take a look at the coastal communities that are all serviced by a private company. Those are the people I feel bad for. Half the time the boat doesn't run and when it does, I don't even want to sit down on those floating garbage piles. Those boats make Marine Atlantic look like luxury cruise liners.

i disagree with privatizing the ferry service to the mainland.the feds are committed to providing the service, under terms of confederation.we allowed them to get rid of the railway, lets not repeat that mistake with the gulf service.
