CORNER BROOK  High unemployment rates and a reputation of a solid workforce have brought a Western Canadian industrial company recruiting in Newfoundland.

Gaby Jegelka, senior recruiter with Monad Industrial Constructors Inc., said there had been quite a bit of interest in the job fair held in Corner Brook during its first of three scheduled days at the Glynmill Inn.

Mid-afternoon Friday there were more than a half-dozen people gathered around a table speaking to members of the recruiting team, as a few more people came and went through the doors.

Resumés in hand, most sat down to fill out applications and ask questions about the potential employment opportunities in Saskatchewan.

The company is seeking carpenters, concrete finishers, millwrights, pipefitters, scaffolders, welders and labourers of all levels for the major expansion of its potash mine in Vanscoy, Sask., near Saskatoon.

In total, Jegelka said the company needed approximately 800 employees this year, with prospects of that many again next year.

“There is quite a bit of unemployment,” she said of the attraction to this province.

“They are hard workers. You have good programs under the apprenticeship, and every apprentice and journeymen, red seal ticket occupation is welcome.”

Jegelka said a good, comparable wage is being offered with bonuses and benefits to attract skilled labourers.

Newfoundland is the first stop for recruiters, who are expecting to hire people across the country. The job fair also had stops in Grand Falls-Windsor and St. John’s.

Yeah and don't wear a baseball hat to a job interview, and sit in a chair with your arms crossed.

like the title says, someone has to get rejected from the applicant pool...why not the fool who does not have the respect to dress properly for a job interview. the guy in the picture has no class....what a waste of a senior recruiter's time to interview such a waste of a person

The writting is on the wall

I hope the workers at the CB pulp & paper mill dont let this opportunity pass without getting their name in the hat. In a few years alot of people will be out of work (at the mill) but its amazing what a little planning ahead can do. the writting is on the wall, be proactive rather then reactive. A change in life style is hard, but not impossible.
