Visitors to Newfoundland and Labrador now have a digital travel guide to show them around the province.

But those visitors will have to own an Apple mobile device, since the new app is available only for iPad, iPhone and iPod devices.

The new app, available in the Apple store as the Newfoundland and Labrador Travel Guide, was launched today by Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Derrick Dalley.

“The Newfoundland and Labrador Travel Guide iPhone app is a free on-the-ground trip planning tool which provides an extensive and current source of Newfoundland and Labrador travel planning information. Whether seeking on-the-spot updates on current happenings such as festivals and events or iceberg and whale sightings, this app has is all,” he said in a news release.

Some of the app features include:

The map features location-based features such as searching by what’s closest to the user, as well as the ability to save favourites.

The app includes news and social media updates, as well as background information by region.

The directory of tourism operators is accessible without a cellular or Internet connection.

The app also includes weather reports.

A government spokeswoman confirmed there were plans to launch an Android version of the app but there is currently not a plan to develop a Blackberry version of the app.

Android users can expect an app for their device sometime in 2013.

The Apple app was developed by St. John’s based Target Marketing in partnership with ZedIT and Toronto-based MobileFringe.

The app can also be downloaded here: www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/PlanYourTrip/MobileApp.

Wrong RS, Apple holds over 54% of today's mobile market and it only makes sense to target those devices first. Most all sw titles are quickly ported for Android and other OSs so it won't be long before it will be available for other platforms.

Shawn you cannot say things like this. Apple has now entered into the pop cultural lexicon and is as mainstream as breathing. People have lost any concept of it bewing a for-proift corporation that now thrives off of its free, insidious advertising ---- and all while the world is in the throes of 'Occupying' and despising the essence of the large corporation. The mindless maob has decided.....just accept and accept the the mindlessnesss.
