Eastern regional environmental assessment now complete

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (CNLOPB) has completed a regional environmental assessment for offshore eastern Newfoundland and is moving forward with the latest call for bids for exploration work in the area.

The call for bids — including areas in the active Jeanne d’Arc Basin, the Flemish Pass and the lesser known Carson Basin — will close Dec. 12. A minimum bid for working in the area has been set at $10 million.

Meanwhile, the regional environmental assessment completed by the CNLOPB, also known as a strategic environmental assessment, has looked at key considerations for oil and gas industry projects in the offshore area going forward.

The roughly 470-page document has been posted to the CNLOPB website and concludes a process started in May 2013 and involving public consultations this past fall.

Each project proposed for offshore eastern Newfoundland, whether exploratory geoscience or drilling work, will still require its own environmental review.

Organizations: CNLOPB
