Youth Ventures — By Maddison Canning/Special to The Star

During this summer, more than 45 youth in the surrounding area joined the Youth Ventures program. Youth from communities along the west coast of Newfoundland contacted a Youth Ventures co-ordinator near them for assistance in starting up or expanding a summer business.

Types of businesses ranged from pet sitting or dog walking, photography, paintings, sketches and other artwork, cupcakes and other baked goods, temporary tattoos, hand-made jewelry, lawn care, babysitting and musical entertainment, just to name a few.

The level of talent in local young people is definitely something of which to be proud.

Between the Humber, Long Range, and Humber Valley/White Bay regions, 35 businesses were started up by youth.

These regions cover Corner Brook and the Bay of Islands, Stephenville and the surrounding area, and Deer Lake and the surrounding area, respectively.

Not all youth who joined Youth Ventures had the intention of starting a summer business.

Some youth in these areas have came to Youth Ventures for help researching into business ideas, writing business plans, financial training or even just to volunteer at some local events. For an annual program offered to youth for free, there are many activities in which they can get involved.

This past week marked the closing of Youth Ventures for the 2014 season, with the annual Youth Ventures Awards taking place in St. John’s last Thursday.

This ceremony highlighted some of the many successful young entrepreneurs across the province and their achievements. Each region had a smaller ceremony to recognize local youth for their efforts, to congratulate them on their accomplishments, and to encourage them to continue following their entrepreneurial dreams.

Watch next summer for some of these local youth entrepreneurs to return with their businesses, and for many other young people to take on new business ventures in a nearby area.

The regional offices for Youth Ventures are now closed until spring of 2015, however, the provincial office is always open.

For more information about Youth Ventures, please contact the provincial co-ordinator at the toll-free telephone number 1-800-833-1829 or through email at
