About 50 workers marched from the headquarters of the Communications Energy and Paperworkers Union Locals 64 and 292 on Broadway Monday morning. The parade route took the group to Main Street, Park Street and West Street and Main Street once more before hitting Herald Avenue and Broadway again stopping back at the Club 64.
Among the group were members of the paperworkers, the International Association of Aerospace Workers and Machinists along with members of the Newfoundland Association of Public and Private Employees.
Travis Stoodley, a member of Local 64, held the union’s banner as the group marched down West Street.
Stoodley said he marched to celebrate the workers of the world who build the things many people take for granted. He said there were a few folks along the parade route but unfortunately most were there only by coincidence.
“There’s a few people around, but not too many on the go,” Stoodley said. “I guess people are gone out to their cabins.”
Brian Quigley, president of Local 64, said the parades used to be bigger when there were more people in the city and more people working at places like Corner Brook Pulp and Paper.
“You’ve got to keep this day alive. It’s a little stand for labour.”
