Corner Brook -

Corner Brook is celebrating 100 years of Canada's navy.

A 35-piece band from the Canadian Navy is set to play a concert at Corner Brook Regional High School May 30.

The Stadacona Band of Maritime Forces Atlantic is performing the concert in Corner Brook. It's one of six regular force military bands in Canada.

Coun. Priscilla Boutcher is helping organize the event, which is one of 46 such celebrations set for this year.

"Sailors and Songs: A Musical Tribute to a Century of Canadian Naval Service" is a Canadian Naval Centennial activity aimed at highlighting the service to Canadians.

"When I see this and these professional people associated with the naval band, I think of our youth," Boutcher said.

The music will cover from the birth of the navy, its development in the First World War, its buildup in the Second World War and the Battle of the Atlantic along with the impact the navy had on Canada, the home front and families. It will also cover the rebuilding period of the 1950s and 1960s through to the modern fleet and the future.

"We're celebrating 100 years of naval service in Canada," Boutcher said. "I think it augurs well.

"I think people will be missing out if they don't try to get a ticket to go."
