Corner Brook - CORNER BROOK - Think big, act big, start small.

That was a little piece of free advice about 10 people received who took part in a BizLaunch.ca education session held at the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook Tuesday evening.

The session, aimed at training entrepreneurs to build, market and sustain a small business enterprise, drew a small mixture of new and longtime business owners as well as a few business students looking to store some tips away for future reference.

"With small businesses, people feel very isolated," Jacqui Walsh, the BizLaunch consultant who hosted the session, told The Western Star during a break. "They don't really know who to turn to. They are trying to figure out all these skills and different things they have to learn all by themselves, and there is so much help out there.

"If people wanted the help, there's lots of places they can go to get it. They can get to network with other people starting a business, they get talk to experts who know about it, so it is an absolutely fantastic idea for them to get out and take in these seminars."

Basic skills and knowledge of marketing was the aim of the session. Walsh said the participants won't have all the answers afterwards, but it will open the door for further learning and direction.

"Hopefully, they leave with the sense that, 'yes, I can do this, it is not that hard afterall,' and, 'yes, there are people I can go to if I need help.'"

Diane Graves began Easy Driving School in June of last year. She operates out of Deer Lake and said business went well in the summer, but has fallen during the winter months.

She attended Tuesday to gain some skills to help her grow that business.

"The branding issue of the school is big," she said, "and to find my competitive edge.

"...It's free and any bit of marketing information, from the business part of it, will help me, educate me."
