CORNER BROOK  A pair of mothers stood smiling, proudly looking on as their Chinese children took part in the New Year celebrations representative of their heritage.

But there was a marked difference in these two women — a demonstration of the diversity of Corner Brook that may not have been so common years ago.

One of these ladies is a caucasian Newfoundlander; the other a Chinese immigrant.

They stood together nonetheless, alongside many people from the area, at the Family Resource Centre in Corner Brook to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Friday.

It was something of an anniversary for Barb Layden. It’s been two years since she travelled to China to adopt her daughter, Alana, who is now three-years-old. When she was there, she experienced a bit of the amazing Chinese New Year celebrations.

“Last year, we got together with other families who have adopted and we all went to the Dragon Restaurant to celebrate,” Layden said.

Although her daughter is still young, her mother already has her understanding that she is from China. She said it is important for her that Alana knows her ancestry.

“That is where she came from, and she knows that,” she said. “She watches videos, looks at books and the pictures.

“She also celebrates all the Canadian traditions.”

Meanwhile, Ning Wang has lived in Corner Brook for about four years. Her children, Luis and Sophia, got to experience a bit of China here in Corner Brook Friday.

“This is certainly very welcoming,” Wang said. “We feel at home.”

She said they celebrate the Chinese New Year with friends around them, something which is special to them.

Wang acknowledges she does not know her culture and heritage like her mother and grandmother does, but that it is nice to be able to pass along something of her own country to her new home.
