Spartan Corner — Stephenville High School
By Rebecca Roberts
Last weekend, Stephenville High School hosted an invitational basketball tournament.
It began last Friday and was co-ordinated by Lynn MacDonald, a teacher at Stephenville High.
There were four teams invited to play against the Stephenville High Spartans, including the Stephenville Women’s Team, the Grenfell Campus university team, the Elwood High school team and the Xavier Grade 9 team.
The Spartans won their first game against Deer Lake 49-39, with Katara White receiving player of the game. Their second game was against the Stephenville Women, and they once again prevailed 34-29. Emily Alexander was named the player of game for their second win.
Unfortunately, they could not pull through in their third game against Grenfell, but bounced back and won their final game against Xavier on Saturday. Hannah Stokes received player of the game in their only loss, with Katelyn Barker getting the honour in the final game.
With a record of three wins and one loss, the Spartans advanced to the championship game and faced Grenfell for a Saturday night rematch. The Spartans again fell short to the team from Grenfell, losing by a mere five points in a highly competitive game. Amber Leroy was named player of the game in the championship game.
This same team, whose members include: Emily Alexander, Hannah Stokes, Amber Leroy, Katelyn Barker, Kara Alexander, Taylor Hefferan, Samantha Rubia, Katara White, Kelly Hurley, Desiree Bennett, Charlotte Elliot and Olivia Henley will be playing in the regional tournament this weekend.
They hope to prevail at that tournament and continue on to provincials which will be held in Deer Lake two weeks from now.
