Saint News —  St. James Regional High
By Ryan Slaney

There are lots of things happening at James Regional High School.

The student council recently hosted a semi-formal dance dubbed the “Snow-Ball” that saw about 70 students attend.

During the dance, our school, “Camera Crew” organized a photo booth and had a great time capturing some happy moments. The Camera Crew is made up of the school’s photography club, led by Ms. Ward. The club takes photos at school events and meet after school on Tuesdays.

Students in the French 2200 class visited St-Pierre-et-Miquelon from Feb. 21-25.

St. James Regional’s Spirit Week took place Feb. 24-28. Our Pink Day committee and the school council paired up in organizing a fun-filled week with daily activities in the gymnasium and recess and lunchtime.

We had daily dress codes (i.e. Superhero Day, Jersey Day, etc.), a scavenger hunt, a Stand-up Day assembly on Feb. 26th with guest speaker Grant Fitzpatrick of the Newfoundland and Labrador Mental Health Association in St. John’s. Students and staff wore pink T-shirts or other articles of pink clothing to promote anti-bullying awareness.

On Wednesday, we held our annual idol competition with 12 of our students putting off amazing performances. Lucas Kettle was chosen 2014 St. James Regional High Idol. Well done to all other performers and to our three judges who provided a wonderful evening of entertainment.

The LGBTQ (Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender-Questioning) group meets every Thursday at lunch and is open to new members. Talk to Mrs. O’Brien if you’re interested in joining. A No H’8 Skate is being held on Monday, March 24, at 3:15 p.m. All members of the general public are invited to bring your skates, and support our LGBTQ community.

Meanwhile, the newly formed French Club (Le Cercle Français) is up and running and is open to new members. Miss Spurrell is the person to see if you want to join.

For students who would like a little help with their courses, there is tutoring Monday-Thursday after school in the library.

St. James Regional High has several sports groups holding practices on a regular basis.

Girls ball hockey practices are Mondays and Fridays after school and see Mrs. Parsons if you’re interested in joining. Wrestling is on-going. Speak to Mr. Quilty for more information.

Boys ball hockey will be starting soon. Speak with Mr. Dutcher if you’re interested in joining.

Our hockey team’s season is coming to an end on March 20, when they will take on the Junior Mariners at 6:30 p.m.

Prior to their final contest, our boys will play host to Rocky Harbour on March 13, at 4:30 p.m. Be sure to come out and support our team.
