Michelle Hartley of Stephenville will be performing at the famed Carnegie Hall in New York Monday as a member of the Westminster Symphonic Choir.

Michelle Hartley, a former resident of Stephenville, will be fulfilling a long time dream when she performs at Carnegie Hall in New York on Monday.

According to a prepared release, this will be the New York City premiere of Christopher Rouse’s Requiem with the Westminister Symphonic Choir and the New York Philharmonic conducted by Alan Gilbert.

The concert will be broadcast live on WQXR-FM and online at www.wqxr.org at 7:30 p.m. (New York time).

Hartley is a student at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey, where she is a member of the Westminster Symphonic Choir, which is composed of students at the college.

The choir has recorded and performed with major orchestras under virtually every internationally acclaimed conductor of the past 79 years.

Recognized as one of the world’s leading choral ensembles, the choir has sung more than 350 performances with the New York Philharmonic alone.

Hartley is currently studying for her Master’s degree in piano performance, pedagogy and kantorie.

She also auditioned for the early Music Chamber Choir.

A winner of the Stephenville Rotary Music Festival’s Rose Bowl, she graduated from St. Stephen’s High School in 2000, then studied at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick majoring in music with a minor in French, completing her French minor at Strasbourg University in Strasbourg, France in May of 2003.

As a third year student under Mount Allison University’s Language Department Program, Hartley received her Bachelor of Music Degree in 2004 and her Bachelor of Music Education from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2008.

She then started teaching music under the Halifax Regional School Board and performed with the Zara Chamber Choir during her stint in Nova Scotia.

Hartley is very appreciative of her piano teacher Mary Dawson and Howard Larade, her high school band instructor, for their guidance and support in music.
