Corner Brook -

Mill workers are upset a day after 15 non-union workers lost their jobs at Corner Brook Pulp and Paper and union leadership were told all management employees would be receiving what amounted to production bonuses.

According to a unionized mill employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions, said part of management's pay changes with the performance of the mill.
This is referred to a variable pay.

News of the bonus came a month after mill unions voted for a 10 per cent wage reduction.

Management employees did not participate in the pay reduction.

Union members were expected to give up two weeks of vacation in addition to the pay reduction.

Before the 15 positions were cut this week, there were 84 non-union employees at the mill.
The Star was unable to confirm which jobs were lost in the latest round of cuts.

Gary Healey, national representative of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union, would not comment on management pay or layoffs.

Corner Brook Pulp and Paper declined comment.

In an article on the layoffs in the Thursday edition of The Western Star Kruger said it does not discuss labour relations as a matter of policy.
