The H1N1 virus has claimed an eighth victim in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Eastern Health says a 40-year-old woman died Saturday within the health district.

It says the woman had underlying medical conditions.

The woman's age and hometown have not been released.

Health officials said last week there are reviewing the role that H1N1 may have played in another six deaths in the province.

Newfoundland and Labrador opened its H1N1 vaccination program to the general public over the weekend.
