Gander - Shannon Murrin has been handed a 75-day jail term for twice failing to show up for court.
The 57-year-old, of Portugal Cove-St. Philip's, pleaded guilty to both charges in court in Gander provincial court Tuesday and was sentenced Wednesday.
Murrin was first supposed to be in court in Gander March 25 to face charges of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and possession of contraband tobacco. When he didn't show, a warrant was issued for his arrest. He turned himself in at RCMP headquarters in St. John's the following day, claiming Gander had been too far to go.
He appeared in provincial court in St. John's that day and was released with the promise to be in Gander April 8. When he missed that court date, another warrant was issued for his arrest. Murrin turned himself into RCMP later that evening.
He's due back in court June 3 to answer to the drug charges, which stem from a November 2007 incident.
