STEPHENVILLE — Danielle Alexander, a resident of Fort McMurray, Alta. who has lots of ties to people in the Bay St. George area, is one of the houseguests on the first Big Brother Canada.

She was one of 15 people selected to participate in the reality show from a pool of 10,000 people across the country who auditioned.

While Alexander grew up in Fort McMurray, her father Dan Alexander is from Kippens and her mother Lisa Walsh, is from Port au Port. She has a grandmother, Linda Alexander, living in Kippens and a grandfather Carl Walsh, living in Boswarlos on the Port au Port Peninsula.

Her grandmother, Heather Walsh, died in Fort McMurray nearly four years ago.

Alexander survived the first round on Wednesday night, as Kat Yee, a bartender from Toronto, was the first to be evicted from the mansion, located in Toronto, Ont.

Alexander is competing for the top prize of $100,000 and a new car, plus $25,000 for the purchase of furniture.

Her grandfather, Carl Walsh, said he hopes his granddaughter don’t leave the house until she has the $10,000 in her hand.

In an online question and answer for the show, Alexander describes herself as fun, opinionated, and outgoing. She said being on Big Brother Canada is providing a good opportunity to further her acting career.

“This is fun! I need more excitement in my life. Fort McMurray is a small town. Everyone knows me and my family — we’re loud social butterflies about town. It’s time to get me out in the world,” Alexander said.

Alexander said her strategy going into the house is to form an alliance with people she naturally clicks with, but said she won’t hang out with them.

“I don’t want to put our connection on display for everyone to judge and feel threatened by. I also won’t hate anyone openly (just in the Diary Room), but I’m sure that people will get on my nerves. I’m not afraid to lie or confront anyone. I’m not a bitch, but I can be one if I need to,” she said.

She plans on hiding the fact that she’s not poor from her houseguests.

“I don’t want people not to like me because I grew up getting everything I wanted — trips, hobbies, clothes, etc. I’ll just lie and tell people that I had a little less than average — but I don’t want them to think that I’m poor either. That’s just not me — I don’t know how to act poor.”

Asked if the physical or mental challenges will be more difficult for here, Alexander said the mental challenges will be hard for her, but in the physical aspect, she’s a very competitive person as she competed in gymnastics for 10 years so she’s confident she will do well.

Describing her perfect day, she said she would eat breakfast because she loves breakfast, then spend her day lying on the beach, go shopping and incorporate her dream job into the day somehow — and be with her friends.

Asked her biggest pet peeve, she said she hates dirty people.

Gone from the house way too soon. Very entertaining. Could have become Canada's version of Britney Haynes from BB 12 and BB 14.

The show would not be entertaining if it wasn't for the silly thing Danielle says..... From the natives don't sweat to the fake air etc.... I get a lot of laughs from the show and most of them are from what Danielle says. I hope she stays on the show.

I mean, good on her for being on TV I guess, nothing bad to say about her. But I can't believe what qualifies for "news" these days... reality TV is just explotiation of people, we sit there and gawk and make fun and it's such crap TV. I'm sure there are other stories in BSG out there to report on that are more relevant to "news" or some other kind of warm fuzzie storie. What crap.

You got that right Jen. What blows me away even more, is that these irrelevant articles are constantly the most discussed. News is nothing more than a part of entertainment these days, not by accident either.

Actually that is envy, the green eyed monster, jealousy is something else. I hope she wins, good for her, at least she's trying to do something for herself.

Let's see....Government cuts, nope no story....economics in Corner Brook....nope no story....political happenings in Western Newfoundland...nope no story...some silly article about a girl on another needless reality show that is related to people from Newfoundland, one of the first three posted on the paper's homepage. If this is the biggest News in Western Newfoundland, maybe we should rethink having media in the area.

I agree, i'm in Fort mcMurray right now, and its far from a small town, i grew up in a small town of less than 100 people. this is a city. buzz around town is people are disgusted with her, and the image she's putting forth. clearly doesn't understand the meaning of a hard days work, which is what a lot of people do up here.
