CORNER BROOK With no farmer’s market organized in the Corner Brook area for the past two summers, Niki Hollohan of Irishtown-Summerside was missing having a venue where she and other local craftspeople could sell their wares.
After talking about the lack of a market-style venue with fellow artist Shannon Coyle from Gillams, the two decided to try and organize their own craft fair.
This Saturday will mark the opening of the Wonderful Fine Market, a weekly market for locally produced crafts and foods that will be happening at the Royal Canadian Legion every Saturday until Dec. 21, with the lone exception of Sept. 21.
“Having a home-based business like I do, you have to be able to get out with your product,” said Hollohan, who creates and sells a variety of knitted crafts. “We wanted to have something that was consistent every Saturday, now that kids are back in school and the summer fun weekend stuff has concluded.”
Hollohan said there are 10 vendors booked for the first one and there are no tables left, but there are openings for some future fairs. The fair is expected to have a wide variety of art, crafts and food items.
Some musicians have offered to pay live music during the craft fair and the organizers will welcome anyone who wants to get up and perform a sort set during the other fairs scheduled throughout the fall.
There is a possibility that, if the interest is there, for the fair to expand beyond the Legion’s lounge area into the larger hall.
“The plan was to keep it in the lounge area downstairs because it is a super cozy venue,” said Hollohan. “It’s just a lovely place to show work and the Legion loved the idea of having that space energized on Saturdays.”
The market will open up at 9:30 a.m. and will run until 2:30 p.m.
Anyone interested in booking a table, playing music or wanting to know more about the fair can check out the Wonderful Fine Market’s page on Facebook or contact Hollohan at 660-0374.
