Actor Gary Jones, who appeared in 108 episodes of 'Stargate SG-1', will be in the city this weekend as headliner guest at Atlanti-Con.
CORNER BROOK — Gary Jones appeared in 108 episodes of “Stargate SG-1” and reprised his role of Walter Harriman in four other installments of the Stargate franchise, but sci-fi is not where the Vancouver-based actor got his start.
Jones started out in comedy working for Second City in Vancouver and today he writes for the CBC radio comedy “The Debaters.” His comedy rolls have included appearances in “The Santa Clause 2” and “Dead Like Me.” Besides appearing in “SG-1,” “Stargate: The Ark of Truth,” “Stargate: Continuum,” “Stargate Atlantis” and “Stargate Universe,” he’s also been in “Supernatural,” Andromeda,” and “The Outer Limits.”
This weekend Jones will combine his love of comedy and his sci-fi experience when he appears as the headliner guest at Atlanti-Con. The sci-fi/fantasy/comics/gaming and anime convention is taking place in Corner Brook on Saturday and Sunday at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Jones said fans will get to hear some funny stories about life on “Stargate.” “Some backstage and behind the camera kind of stuff.”
Jones admits to not being a big fan of sci-fi, and said at first he didn’t get the conventions.
“At first it was so odd to me. It was like what is this world? Who are these people? But the more I was around it, the more I kind of got it. And I was like ‘OK I get it. This is a total community,” he said. “It’s an absolute community.”
Jones said he had no idea that “Stargate” was going to keep going as long as it did.
“It just turned into this fantastic thing.”
And, he said, the fans just love it.
So now he sees the conventions as an “awesome” thing to do.
Last year over 500 people visited Atlanti-Con in its inaugural year. This year organizers say they are on track to meet or exceed that number. About 200 people have already purchased tickets through advanced online sales. Tickets for the convention will now only be available at the door.
Guest this year also include cosplayer Drakaina, Fat Apollo, singer/songwriter Allison Crowe, artist/illustrator Kevin Kendall and authors Krista Ball, Darren Hann and Charles O’Keefe. Twenty-two vendors and 11 exhibitors will also take part.
