Three-year-old Carter Lewis tells Santa Claus what he wants for Christmas this year.

CORNER BROOK  With the main man himself quite busy as Christmas approaches and even all of his elves completely flat out, Santa Claus sometimes has to call upon some reliable help to ensure every last detail is looked after.

That’s where Sam Jones, a.k.a. Sammy Claus, comes in.

It was about seven or eight years ago when Jones first got the call from Santa Claus to lend a helping hand. Stepping into the role of Santa Claus for pre-Christmas public appearances was so unexpected that Jones had to wear a fake beard the first time he did it.

These days, Jones is far more prepared. That long red beard he used to sport when he was in the navy is now grown out into lengthy grey whiskers Santa himself would be proud of.

Jones even got his prescription glasses rounded, just like those of his boss.

“I’ve had lots of kids test out my beard and check my hat for strings, but this is the real deal,” said Jones.

He can only imagine how busy the real Santa is. Jones himself has been booked for special appearances at public and private functions since early December.

He won’t be finished until late Christmas Eve when it’s time for Santa himself to take over the reins and work his special Christmas magic.

A cab driver during the day, Jones doesn’t even have time to remove his big red hat when he’s delivering people all around Corner Brook in his taxi.

“Everyone calls it Santa’s cab,” he said merrily.

Jones loves every minute of being Santa’s big helper.

“I get tears in my eyes doing this sometimes,” he said. “The best part is when you have a kid who is afraid of Santa and you are able to say something to turn them around and make them smile.”
