Whether it’s behind the scenes or on stage, Sheldon Parsons loves being a part of community theatre.
Parsons got his start in theatre while attending high school in his hometown of Norris Point.
“We grew up in a time period where they would always do Christmas concerts, but it wouldn’t be like you have here in Corner Brook where it’s all about the music.”
Christmas concerts in a small outport town generally consisted of people getting together and performing sketches, he said.
“More often than not they were written by ourselves, funny to ourselves and hopefully funny to those who saw them.”
When Parsons first came to the city, some 20 years ago, it was to attend university. During his years at Grenfell he watched the fine arts school being built and got involved with theatre on campus. Later, while living in Stephenville, he got involved with community productions through Bay Theatre.
“My physical form has either been on stage or behind the stage at any point in time over the past few years.”
His behind-the-stage work has seen him make props for a variety of shows. That’s primarily what his involvement with Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador (TNL) has been. About three years ago he found himself back on the stage after getting a small part, losing it, and getting a larger part in “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Since then the professional sign maker by day has been involved ever since.
On Saturday he’ll take to the stage at the Corner Brook Arts and Culture Centre as a member of the cast of TNL’s Sexy and Dangerous Theatre. The annual Valentine fundraiser has a theme of “Backstage to Broadway” this year.
Parsons said the concept is the cast members are all working backstage and the show builds from that. He said the show is all about trying to warm up the dead of winter with an intense, hot show with music and dance and dress.
“What little dress there’s going to be,” he said with a laugh.
And he has a number in the second act that he promises will be a “crowd stopper.”
“It’s one that I didn’t see coming, but thought ‘this is going to be a lot of fun.’”
Sexy and Dangerous gets underway with a champagne reception at 7 p.m., followed by the show at 8 p.m.
