Blaine Park of Meadows recently released his first album, Eastward Bound.

Watching his young sons play guitar and sing takes Blaine Park back to his own childhood.

“I can picture myself doing the same thing,” said the Meadows man.

Park was about the same age as his eldest son Simon, 13, when he first started to play.

Growing up in Cox’s Cove, Park said his older brother played the guitar and there were a few guys around town who offered lessons.

Over the years Park, who is now 42, would play at events and parties around his home and at one point had his own one-man band.

In 2006 Park started a career in nursing and worked for a year in Stephenville before hitting the road. He worked in Nunavut for a bit and for the last three years has been nursing in Ontario.

He’s currently working in the northern part of that province on a reserve in Round Lake.

While he’s away, generally for three to four weeks at a time, wife Patti Lou holds down the fort at home with Simon and their younger son Jaden, six.

Recently though his love of music and performing has taken him in another direction of becoming a recording artist. Park released his first album last month with Sevenview Studios out of Springdale.

Eastward Bound features all original, country-folk songs written by Park.

“It was exciting for sure,” he said of doing the recording. “It was something I wanted to do basically all my life. I guess, I never, ever thought I’d get the chance to do it at a professional studio.”

Still listening to his CD for the first time was a it surreal.

“It’s kind of strange, too, listening to yourself on a CD. It’s something different for sure.”

Park’s favourite song from the album is A Fisherman’s Life. “It’s one of the first ones I wrote and it’s based on my father being a fisherman. It’s probably the most personal song on the album.”

A fan favourite is Angel Wings. “It’s a song about being left behind. Loved ones dying. I think people can relate to that. Most people have lost people who are close to them.”

Eastward Bound is available for purchase on iTunes and on Park’s own website, He’s also hoping to get it out in some local stores.
