Denny Solo may be gone, but his legacy, including his musical genes, will be present as strong as ever at Denny Jam 3 in Corner Brook this weekend.
On the bill for Sunday’s youth show will be Neveroddoreven, a six-piece band fronted by vocalist Phil Power, who is Denny Solo’s son.
The third edition of the fundraiser for the ALS Society, subtitled “Just Beat It,” will be the first since Mr. Solo, a well-known drummer, died from the disease in April.
This year, the event has expanded from a one-night show featuring a variety of local performers tonight to a two-day gig that will feature a selection of up-and-coming young performers in what’s being dubbed “Junior Jam” on Sunday.
Having an extra day of Denny Jam set aside exclusively for younger musicians was never something Power heard his dad mention explicitly, but he knows it is something his dad would be the first to approve of.
“You have these other bands who are established and have been doing their thing for a while and it’s great that everyone is keeping it up, but this gives the younger guys a chance to give it a go and see how people like them,” said the 16-year-old of Sunday’s show. “I think he would have really appreciated the thought and would be really interested in what the younger bands were doing.”
All proceeds will go to the ALS Society of Newfoundland and Labrador to support ALS clients, their families and caregivers.
Both events will be staged at the Royal Canadian Legion.
