PORT AU PORT WEST - The Port au Port Agricultural Fall Fair just seems to get bigger and better each year.

Danny McCann, chairman of the event, said this year's fair was more than good. In fact, he described it as superb.

He estimated that 2,500 people attended the fair, held at Our Lady of Mercy Complex grounds, on Saturday, which is comparable to the numbers they normally have during the two-day event.

He said on Sunday, there were about 1,500 people in attendance and they had people from all across western Newfoundland to as far away as Grand Falls-Windsor.

"From all reports the booth holders were more than happy with some of them commenting that if they didn't sell a thing on Sunday, it would still be okay since their sales were so good on Saturday," McCann said.

His wife Mary, who was handling the kitchen and dining room area, said from her end it was absolutely amazing with some 500 fish cakes sold on Saturday and another 250 on Sunday, not to mention the countless pots of soup, toutons, beans and mussels.

"On Saturday the volunteers working the kitchen had no breaks at all. It was totally amazing," she said.

Danny McCann said each year the fair gets bigger and better and this year there were certainly record sales and record numbers of people in attendance.

On behalf of fair operators, the Port au Port Economic Development Association, he expressed their appreciation to all the booth holders and all who attended, and on behalf of the Gravels Development Group, which operates the kitchen and canteen, thanks to their many volunteers, as well as those who donated and prepared food.

The organizing committee has already set Sept. 26 and 27, 2009 as the date for next year's event.
