CORNER BROOK — The Long Range Quilters Guild is holding its seventh biennial quilt show this weekend at the Pepsi Centre.

The show, titled Traditions: Old and New, starts Friday and will run until Sunday, featuring a display of over 100 quilts, wall hangings and pillowcases. A raffle quilt by Jinny Beyer called Kinabalu will also be displayed, as well as over 25 community quilts.

Quilting demonstrations will be held Saturday and Sunday and will feature lessons on such things as thread painting, paper piercing and traditional methods of binding a quilt. One of the shows feature displays will be an array of traditional quilting items and quilts shown side by side with modern ones.

The pillowcase display will feature 45 pillowcases which were completed as part of the group’s president’s challenge. Another area of interest to the public is the Quilters’ Boutique featuring a large variety of quilt and quilt related items for sale.

The group was formed in 1997 with 30 members from various communities on the west coast.  Today the guild consists of over 100 members who share their love for quilting.

Each year the guild undertakes a community project where quilts or quilt related items are made by guild members and donated to many organizations in the province. For example, last year the guild donated 20 quilts to the Women’s and Children’s Health unit at Western Memorial Regional Hospital.  Other quilts were also donated to Xavier House and to Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador for a fundraiser.

This year, the guild will donate 25 comfort quilts to the Ronald McDonald House in St. John’s.  Also, two queen-sized quilts will be raffled during a fundraiser and the proceeds donated to the Ronald McDonald House.  Some of these quilts will be prominently displayed during the show this weekend.

Tickets for the raffle quilt are available from any guild member and can also be purchased at the show and the draw will take place Sunday afternoon.
