CORNER BROOK — If Michelle Henley and her family were looking for a taste of winter in Corner Brook, they couldn’t have picked a better year.

After several mild winters, near-constant snowfall this season has reminded many residents of the snowy, blustery winters of past years.

A St. John’s native, Henley and her partner Anthony Card took their boys Alexander and Benjamin to Margaret Bowater Park Monday for Family Fun Day in the Park.

The event included a snow sculpture and snowman building contest as part of this year’s Corner Brook Winter Carnival.

Henley said the day and the carnival are just the kind of fun, family oriented events she and Card were hoping to find during their first winter in the city.

“We’ve heard a lot about it so we thought we’d come down and take advantage of Family Fun Day,” Henley said. “This tops St. John’s by a mile. It’s just fun in the outdoors with the family. It’s great and they love the snow.”

As with the work of any budding young artists, Henley said the sculpture the family was working on was likely subject to the whims of her sons’ young, creative minds.

“It might be a cake, but it could turn into a toque,” she said with a laugh while watching her boys join forces to shape the sculpture.

“They’re loving it down here. They’ve had the chance to see all the mascots.”

Meanwhile, Monty Brown and his wife Tonya brought their daughter Trinity and her friends to the park for the day.

Brown said he has fond memories of the Winter Carnivals of his youth, and was happy to share the day with his family. He and his wife agreed the day was a fun, rare chance to spend time with their daughter during a winter weekday.

“This is a big day for her,” Brown said. “She had this planned all winter and couldn’t wait for today. We’re going to have some hot chocolate and make them whatever they want to make.”

Too bad the City of Corner Brook shut down the transit system for Carnival day. I know quite a few folks that wanted to go to this event, but couldn't because there were no busses running. This is the mentality we are dealing with down there at City Hall. This is a prime example of the backwards thinking of The City of Corner Brook and why they are making the transit system useless. It's almost like they want it to be useless so they can trash it completely. Maybe if they do, they will give themselves an upgrade to MacBook Airs this time.
