STEPHENVILLE — Amanda Forward of Corner Brook was one of the biggest animal lovers on the planet.

That’s according to her mom, Gail Langdon, who is now living in the Stephenville area and who organized an event in her daughter’s memory to assist the Bay of Islands Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, along with the Society for the Care and Protection of Animals in Bay St. George.

Ms. Forward, who lost her life in a traffic accident on Dec. 18, 2008, volunteered at the Bay of Islands SPCA for a number of years and adopted one of her cats there.

“So this is something we (family and friends of Ms. Forward) do for her,” Langdon said. “Last year we had a fundraiser only in the Corner Brook area but this year we invited my Stephenville friends to join.”

She said the fundraiser has helped her with the healing process and she hopes to be able to do this for many more years to come as a way of honouring Ms. Forward’s memory.

It was mid-November when Langdon issued an invitation to friends and family to join the “penny-nickel-dime-quarter-a-thon.” Subsequently Ms. Forward’s friend Paul Quilty created an event on Facebook to promote the fundraiser.

Langdon asked friends and family in Corner Brook and Stephenville to collect all their coin from Nov. 18-Dec. 18 with cash proceeds to be donated the Bay of Islands SPCA and food and litter items to the Bay St. George SCAPA in Stephenville.

She took pride in the fact that they raised $1,100 in donations in the Corner Brook area and $340 for the Bay St. George animal shelter, with more donations still trickling in.
