HAMILTON - As seven of Emily Carr's paintings draw international attention in Kassel, Germany, a much larger exhibition of the celebrated B.C. artist's works is on display at the Art Gallery of Hamilton.
"Nature and Spirit: Emily Carr's Coastal Landscapes," a touring show organized by Vancouver Art Gallery, comprises 38 paintings ranging from early experiments with European modernism to mature landscapes. It runs until Oct. 28.
"To present such an impressive selection from all periods of her painting career is a rare opportunity and privilege," said Tobi Bruce, senior curator of Canadian historical art at the Hamilton gallery.
Guided tours of the exhibition are being offered every Sunday.
Carr, who died in 1945, is among artists being featured this summer in Kassel at the influential dOCUMENTA art showcase, held every five years.
