Brooklyn Corner man to serve federal sentence for sexual assault

KENTVILLE, NS - A Brooklyn Corner man has been handed federal jail time for committing a sexual assault and failing to comply with probation.

Andrew Michael Laing, 29, pleaded not guilty to the charges last April and his trial was held Nov. 8. In a decision handed down on Nov. 24, Laing was found guilty on both charges. The matters were adjourned to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.

On March 22, Judge Jean Whalen sentenced Laing to a total of two years in custody to be followed by two years of probation. Whalen imposed a 20-year Sex Offender Information Registration Act (SOIRA) order against Laing and a 10-year firearm prohibition. A primary DNA order was granted and Laing was fined a total of $400 in victim surcharges.

Laing committed the offences in Brooklyn Corner on Feb. 14, 2016.
