ST. JOHN’S — The recreational groundfish and the northern cod fisheries will remain unchanged in Newfoundland and Labrador this year.

Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield announced details for the two fisheries Thursday.

The groundfish fishery will be run in various Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization areas from July 23 to Aug. 14.

It will also open for one week in the fall, starting Sept. 24

There will be a daily bag limit of five fish per person, and a boat limit of 15 fish if three or more people are fishing.

Season dates for the northern cod stewardship fishery will be announced in the coming weeks, but the individual quota level of 1,470 kg for the year will remain in effect.

I can not believe that the minister can not give the Newfoundlanders a better season and allow them to catch their 50 or 60 fish for the winter. The dates are fine but why have us go out their even on windy days to get our fish. I think it is totally unfair compared to Nova Scotia Regulations and I think we should form a boycott and 50 or 60 boats go out and get what fish they want. The fisherys will only be able to catch 2 or 3 boats and maybe that will make them realize how cruel and unfair they are to us Newfoundlanders. This sounds like The PC Gov taking out revenge on us Newfies because of how danny williams treated Steven Harper. Minister, I am getting my fish so your rules and regs are rediculuis but think of all the locals that dont have a boat and no way to get fish. I cant believe that a man of your intelligence and positiion can treat us like this and be able to sleep well at night. Ed Fulford from Stephenville.

Quit whining. If your cod fisheries weren't exploited to collapse and near extinction, you could have your 50-60 fish per family. Your communities sold out to foreign factory trawlers and you have to live with the consequences. I bet 18 years on you are still complaining about losing your cod industry-related job, while collecting your government-funded bailout!
