The axe has fallen at Corner Brook Pulp and paper with at least 43 full-time jobs being cut from various mill unions.
Union representatives were informed of the job losses during individual meetings between each union and senior management, including officials from Kruger’s head office, on Wednesday.
Local 64, the largest of the unions, was hit the hardest with 23 jobs set to be removed from its roughly 150-person membership in the coming months.
There were eight direct layoffs in the machinists union, while four more from that local have been told their jobs will soon be gone.
Six full-time positions will be cut from the Local 242 papermakers, while ne job from each of the electricians, instrumentation and office staff locals will also be cut.
Union officials are hoping that most of the cuts will be absorbed by either retirements or the full-time employees moving back into the casual pool.
