CORNER BROOK — It is too early to comment about the ramifications of the new labour contracts, says Dave Coles.
The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union national president said now is the time for members to digest what happened and figure out where to go from here.
"There are serious issues in the industry, and at that plant, that have to be resolved beyond the collective agreement, but I guess there is a commitment from them to work on that," said Coles.
Coles took some heat from the CEP locals in Corner Brook during the recent negotiation process, who questioned his leadership after he had recommended they accept the offer left with them by the company.
Coles said he may not have been at the table directly, but said he has been involved with the process when requested to do so by the CEP officials who were involved.
"My overarching concern is the state of the industry," said Coles. "It continues to fail and no one seems to care. I'll stick my nose in where I think appropriate.
"They don't have to agree with my recommendations, but I am sure as hell not going to sit on my hands and see the industry continue to spiral out of control."
