A pair of young Deer Lake men made their first court appearances Tuesday facing drug-related charges.

Topics :
RCMP , Deer Lake , Corner Brook

Timothy Ball, 21, and Zachery White, 22, had their legal matters set over during brief appearances in provincial court in Corner Brook. They were both arrested by RCMP and RNC joint forces drug team officers in Deer Lake May 1 following the search of a parked vehicle on a parking lot off Main Street shortly after noon.

Ball, the son of Deer Lake Mayor Dean Ball, was represented by Keir O’Flaherty. The lawyer requested a postponement to review the disclosure provided to him Tuesday. The matter will be called again Aug. 7

White, who is being represented by Jamie Merrigan, had his proceeding set over until July 24. The lawyer was also seeking time to review the disclosure package.

Police seized marijuana, cocaine and a quantity of prescription drugs during the search of the vehicle. Ball is facing two charges of possession (cocaine and marijuana) for the purposes of trafficking and a single count of possession of cocaine and prescription opiates. White is charged with possession of marijuana for the purposes of trafficking.

Ok so get up in arms because the Mayor was named. He is a political member, he has a significant role in Deer Lake. Whoopie! When the rumors first broke about the two young men being arrested, it spread through Deer Lake like wild fire and I am sure the topic was not the two young boys and what they were arrested for, but the fact of who the father was of one. Deer lake has many hyprocrites; two faced pseudo personalities. The Mayor was not bashed just identified. As far as I am concerned, just makes the man and his family real. How many of you hyprocrites out there have family memeber that have broken the law and not YET been caught?

the ball family are and always will be honorable and respected. They are held in highest regard way back to Deans grandfather, his father and now his brothers and sisters. They, and their extended families and relatives are some of the biggest sources of steady employers in the town and are true souls who give back more than they take. I know many well to do families from Deer Lake who have someone who faltered but with family support and sometimes justice and discipline they moved on to becoming productive, valued citizens of our town. I can honestly say that no one tried to cover up or buy away the charges, puishment will be metered out and accepted. Please do not allow the craziness here allow you to think less of your friends and families in your town Ball Family, you should continue to hold your heads high not hung in shame, no one has earned the right to judge you . And i am sure your son could use his dad right now more than ever.

Not surprised, most of the news is laughable and pathetic back here in Newfoundland. Look at the breaking news about a dog at large for the third time LOL!

How pathetic to mention the mayor. The young man is 21 years old and quite capable of taking responsibility for his own actions. And to say, "get out of politics and spend more time with your child"....since when was a 21 year old considered a child? I think a little tact would have gone a long way on the part of the Western Star. I guess sensationalism counts more than professionalism!

As far as I'm concerned, these names, or the names of any one that is still in the accused status, should not be allowed to be published until a conviction is entered into the court systems. What ever happened to one being innocent until proven guilty?

Bottom line is, a few people of a certain family who are suppose to be perfect in town are getting a bad rap for something everyone already knows about. Suck it up and get over it. There is no surprise here -- everyone knows what Deer Lake is all about -- drugs, religion, drugs and more religion. Get high on one or the other.

I could not believe this when I read this story this morning. Why was the parent's name even mention. What have they got to do with this other than being loving parents. We can only guide and hope for the best. Sorry Mayor, I guess who wrote this piece has no children or any family member that did anything wrong. How lucky. Western Star should be ashamed.

Rupert Murdock is looking for a "writer" for the Inquirer..Perhaps you should apply..you seem to be more suited to that environment than here. Every accused person has parents and I note that the Western Star doesn't publish all the parents names. You should be ashamed of yourself.....Roy Whalen

@roy.......more people read the article, and responded to it, because of who was charged. people want to know all the good stuff about public figures. no harm in that is there? if they don't want to make the news they better keep all their ducks lined up in a row. public life is public life. the only one who should be ashamed here is you roy, for trying to impose your smallminded view upon others.

At the age of 16 they are able to move out of the house or buy a car and there is nothing as a parent you can do to stop it. To vote, drink, smoke or even buy a lighter you have to be 19, yet we are responsible for thier choices once they are adults???? DO not tell me if one of your adult children broke the law, you would condone your name being exploited all over the news. Wake up all you "not in my backyard" self righteous critics, YOUR kids were just luck they never got caught!!!!!!!

This arrest is matter of public record..... To mention names is not slander or libel, if the statements are true..... So get over it, already.........good job Western Star...

Drugs are a big problem in this town, as in most towns . The two young men caught and charged are only the tip of the iceberg, although both of the parents are outstanding members of this town, I see nothing wrong with mentioning the Parents names. Everyone in Deer Lake knows who they are anyway. Maybe it will help the offenders reconsider their actions, and the parents will monitor their children more closely.

So are you saying thats is ok to slander the parents to help punish the offenders? I doesn't make sence to punish someone who had nothing at all to do with the crime!

This is completely unnecessary. He is a free thinking, independent adult. Nobody can control a 21 year old's actions. It was his decision and one that I'm sure his father wouldn't have made for him. I think it is tactless on the part of Cory Hurley and the Western Star for running the article when it was written like this and agree with another poster that it seems as if it was a deliberate attempt to discredit the mayor of Deer Lake.

As parents we all try our best to raise our children to be law abiding citizens who contribute to our society. I think some people get pleasure out of the pain of others, especially when that person is in the public eye. I for one, feel for the families of both these young men because I am sure no parent wants to see their child involved in drugs or get in trouble with the law. Mr, Dean Ball and Mr. Dwight Ball should not come under attack because of this. Both men are serving our communities to help improve them. People please have some compassion for the families of these boys. They are going through enough as it is.

I do not see anything wrong with stating that thus was the mayors son. As was previously mentioned, if you get into politics this is what you can expect. It should also have stated that Timothy Ball is the nephew of Dwight Ball, MHA Humber Valley & leader of the opposition Liberals.

who owns the vehicle the two allegedly drug pushers/users were caught in; joint task force? big operation; if vehicle owned by one of young fellows father then it's big deal who young fellow's father his; that his dad is mayor; probably Mayor should get out of politics and spend more time with the son; like tobin did; cause really worked out well for tobin; but tough call; report this connection or not; i think western star made the right call

It seems that certain names were used to discredit and embarrass the mayor or the MHa for the area. Lets stick to the related facts in stories.

It might not make any difference whose son the young fellow is. But hey the mayor is a public figure. Same as we knew that Brian Tobin's son was charged or that Danny William's son was beat up downtown one night. You get into public office, expect anything.

Honestly! Why was it necessary to mention Dean Ball's name here. What does that have to do with the story. Who cares if he was the mayor's son? A handfull of gossips, that's all! The Western Star should have shown a little journalistic integrity here. Stories like this make you look like a tabloid!!!
