People in cabins and campers north of Wheeler’s River on the west side of the Trans Canada Highway on the province’s west coast have been evacuated by the Stephenville RCMP due to a forest fire.

As of 7 p.m. people were still not permitted back in the cabins but there is optimism from onlookers that the cabins will not succumb to the flames as the wind shifted slightly.

Forestry officers, local fire departments a helicopter and water bombers continue on the scene of the fire in the area of Southwest Brook and the Burgeo Highway.

Barachois Search and Rescue members are also on the scene assisting with traffic control and water patrols.

RCMP officers from Burgeo detachment are assisting as well.
