CORNER BROOK — Dale Kirby is not letting the recent poll results go to his head, he recognizes the party has a lot of work to do over the next three years.

The New Democratic Party representative in the House of Assembly for St. John's North has been busy doing just that. He has been in western Newfoundland in recent days, combining a bit of vacation time with his political work.

He attended the Bay St. George Mi'kmaq Powwow Friday and met with a representative of the College of the North Atlantic in Stephenville. Sunday, he met with supporters in Stephenville and did the same in Corner Brook Monday.

He also visited Grenfell Campus of Memorial University in the afternoon and attended a showing of the Stage West Theatre Festival in the evening.

This weekend he will be attending the St. Anthony Come Home Year celebrations.

In Corner Brook Monday, just prior to meeting with approximately a dozen supporters in the early part of the scheduled gathering, Kirby said the recent provincial public opinion poll that placed the NDP in first place was just one poll.

"I think we are headed the right direction, but there is an incredible amount of work to be done," he said.

"We have to make sure that Humber East, Humber West, Bay of Islands, Humber Valley are ready to support local candidates next time around.

"We have to run the best organized campaigns we have ever run in these areas."

The party has no intentions of making promises to people it can't fulfill, according to the university professor and education and skills critic. Following his meeting at Grenfell he said there is a continuous evolution there.

"I personally don't believe we have heard the last of the call for autonomy here," he said. "It is like lunar cycles, eventually it will come back around again.

"I am very supportive of what local academic leaders and community leaders see as the future of the Grenfell Campus."

As a party he said it would be important to hear what the people want in terms of the future of the university here.

"I do see potential for growth and additional program areas that can be added," he said.

"I think we need to continue to grow the campus as far as is reasonable, always being cognizant of the declining youth population in Newfoundland and Labrador."

He said the collaboration between all post-secondary institutions in the area is vital.

as a proud NDP member, I was happy to once again see MHA Dale Kirby visit the West Coast of the island, his second time in 6 months.. People can criticize the party for not bothering to build the party in the past, saying to little to late, but as it was largely a party of one in the past, it was a challenge to do so. I have known Mr. Kirby for a number of years, as I do several of the other members of the caucus and feel that our party has the momentum and drive to continue to grow and elect more and more members. I encourage everyone to get out and speak with NDP members to find out what the party really stands for and to understand its principles rather than simply rattling off the same old tired talking points that are largely based on myth not fact.

Sorry.. sad new for the NDP...This is far as they can go...For the next election...It will be the liberal in power...Not the PC or NDP...First the liberal got to put the brake on...Forget about Dean Macdonald...Put Dwight Ball on the back burner...Start over before it too late... Hold a leadership campaign...But do up a LIST OF QUESTION FOR THE RUNNING CANDIDATES... First question on the list...should be...where do you see NL in the next four years.. This is just a sample question...just to get startes with..

There is your townie attitude loud and clear - grenfell should grow "as far as reasonable", and "be cognizant of declining youth population". Obviously there would be no extra push to promote our west coast university with the NDP. I would like to know his stance on Grenfell autonomy back a few years ago when Memorial in St. John's was pushing back big time. I'm happy the NDP are getting more exposure - people will get a closer look at their policies. Remember their election platform? Two third of the money for their promises was to come from a renegotiated Hebron deal! And then they were told legally they couldn't even do it. They are going to need more experienced backgrounds from their candidates in the next election if they want to run the province. This isn't federal politics. Someone on spring break in Vegas won't win a seat here because of an orange crush.

If an election was held today the NDP would not gain many seats even though they are more popular than the government because they do not have any effective organizations in place outside of St. John's. They have 3 years to fix this and I hope they do!

I was both surprised and impressed with the performance of both Jordan Stringer and Tony Adey in the debate during election 2011. Both NDP candidates were handedly ahead of all other PC and Liberal candidates in knowledge and public speaking ability. I've voted liberal all my life, but voted for Adey in the Bay of Islands - if he runs again, he has my vote. Nice to see the NDP visiting other regions of the Province.

I was at the same forum.. Stringer and Addey were professional yes, but they didn't stand a chance next to marshall and granter. If you mean "we'll promise you everything you want with no plan" to mean public speaking then you're bang on. Eddie Joyce was the biggest spectacle there and he was elected!
