Bay St, George RCMP seized 58 marijuana plants from a series of outdoor grow-ops in the Piccadilly area Monday.

Five clearings were located in a wooded area near Piccadilly, on the Port au Port Peninsula. These clearings were within walking distance of each other, and all had numerous marijuana plants growing in them. Several of the clearings had boards with nails sticking out of them hidden around the perimeter of the plants.

The investigation is still ongoing, and charges have not been laid against anyone at this time.

The public is reminded not to approach marijuana grow-ops, as they can be dangerous. If you locate what you believe to be a marijuana grow-op, please call your nearest police detachment, or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-363-8477.

@ Ed....Not sure whether you meant that someone tried to stash a stolen Cadillac in the Picadilly backwoods or some guy who carries a person's golf clubs got lost there..lol.. In any event, thanks to Living Away for your sensible response to this ridiculous story.. It's refreshing to see that MOST folks take a position on this subject that's more in line with how most Canadians think these days.. It'll be so good when the day comes that we won't have to worry about having to navigate an outdated law and the morons that support it..

I saw this quote on another site......."Hey Dude, give up the 'green pacifier' and face the storms of life like a real man!" I thought it was cute.

Well Said Mr. Hickey! It was quite funny to see an individual attack this small incident! As a former resident of the Bay St. George area and having friends that still reside there it appears to me that a little crop of pot is a joke compared to the amount of cocaine in the area! People need to get a reality check! Booze, cocaine, pills and many more "drugs" (quotations meant for the reference of booze) create way more issues than a small number of pot plants.

John, the RCMP were looking for a "Caddy" from Pasadena! Same place where that was found...Hmmm!

@ Jay [ interesting name under the circumstances ]... You anger me with your return comment.. You are obviously one of those old, straight and totally uninformed people that doesn't know a thing about pot... You wouldn't understand anything about someone's need or desire to use this completely innocuous substance, whether for medical reasons or just recreation. You're too busy being Mr. politically correct to study up on the stuff and get yourself educated.. As for your statement about it being "illegal", it's only that way because of people like yourself.. Yeah, they were doing their jobs alright. Since when are they getting paid the big bucks to go out hiking in the wilderness, hoping to stumble upon someone's small personal stash so they can disrupt it and blow it out of proportion trying to justify it all and make themselves appear as though they are doing their jobs ?? As for the boards with nails in it, that was to protect the plants from animals that eat the stuff, not so some flatfoot can step on it. Hell, if it were me, I'd have bear traps out... You may well be OK with your tax dollars being wasted this way, but I would much prefer they use their resources to chase down real criminals and shut down meth labs and people selling prescription drugs as well as crack cocaine, ecstasy and bath salts... These are the things that are killing and destroying our children, not a few home-grown weed plants. As a former medical specialist, I would never condone the sale and usage of these dangerous drugs, but I will never stop fighting for the legalizing of the comparatively benign marijuana until it gets decriminalized... That's my right as a citizen.. If you can't get involved in the ongoing process to decriminalize or legalize marijuana, maybe it would be best that you keep your negative and outdated opinions to yourself..

They broke the law and they get caught. Them setting up traps (for human or animals) says a lot about their character. Also you saying you would set up bear traps says a lot about your character. What if a child got caught in it? I may have an 'old' opinion on this stuff but it is still against the law and the police done an excellent job. I can't see how anybody doing their job is a waste of taxpayers money. I also don't believe the police just found this stuff randomally while on a 'hike'. They must have had a tip or seen this from a helicopter or other aircraft. Great job RCMP on catching these dirtbags with the grow op and with the traps. Keep up the good work and get more of this junk off the streets and out of our forests.

John Hickey is of touch with reality. The fact that they had boards with nails in indicates that these people are dangerous and need to be stopped. There are hundred of parents in Nl living throught hell because of these drugs. If John had a child that got messed up by drugs he would not be so quick to condome these idiot acts. There isn't enough being done to stop the crimes. There should be a dedicated anti- drug line set up in this province to stop the drugs.

John I don't think this is at all a waste of taxpayers money at all. This is illegal and they got caught! Hats off to the RCMP for doing their job. Those morons even went as far as hiding boards with nails as a sort of trap for anyone to step on. I hope these people get caught and get a severe punishment.

I think the big question here is " what the hell were the RCMP doing poking around in the back woods of Picadilly ? " The news piece is very short on details at the very least. If this is what our tax dollars are being used for, it's time a lobby group get set up to study what is obviously obscene wastage. The number of plants found and their location clearly indicate that it's someone's private supply and likely not meant for resale. I hope they discover that these plants were being grown by a person or persons with a license to grow because they have a medical marijuana exemption. The RCMP could use a little more egg on their faces...Pitiful waste of police resources..
