CORNER BROOK  A 33-year-old man is heading to federal prison for having sexual relationships with two teenage girls.

The man was convicted of two counts of sexual assault stemming from ongoing sexual relationships with a 14-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl in 2009 when he was 29.

The court sentenced him to three years for one count and three and a half years for the other. The sentences will run concurrently for a total for three and a half years, according to court records.

The convictions stem from ongoing sexual relationships with two teenage girls three years ago. The sexual acts occurred multiple times with each victim in Port aux Basques. He was fired from his job when his actions came to light.

The Crown had asked Justice Alan Seaborn in Supreme Court to impose a sentence of between three and four years for the assault on one girl, and five to six years for the second count, which involved anal intercourse.

There were also incidents reported of him providing the girls with alcohol and providing drugs to one of the girls.

The Crown had argued for a sentence of three to four years, while the defence wanted 18-24 months, so the man could serve his time in the provincial system.

When I read these stories I am always amazed at how the attorneys argue over what a sentence should be. Having sex with a minor is just that, so why do they not impose a penalty that sticks all these demented people in jail for a minimum of 10 years or longer. The convicted person here supplied drugs and alcohol to these two girls. He had sex with them. For a lawyer to suggest that the sentence to be reduced so he can serve the time in the province is beyond stupid. Sex offenders of this nature should spend their time with the convicted murderers. In my opinion, there is not much difference between them. Justice sucks!
