STEPHENVILLE — Scott Garnier said he will be fighting for basic Mi’kmaq rights as outlined by the United Nations Declaration on the rights of indigenous people if he is elected chief of Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band.

He has stated his intention to run for the chief of the Qalipu band in the Oct. 23 election.

Garnier said the rights he would looking for include traditional land usage and the right to self-determination and culture.

“In particular the Mi’kmaq language should be offered in each district and not only in the school system, but also at an adult level,” he said.

Garnier is a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland with a bachelor of arts in religious study and philosophy.

Since 1995 he has been involved with the aboriginal movement in regards to genealogy research and in 1999 worked on the land claims project with the Federation of Newfoundland Indians. More recently, Garnier worked with the federation processing applications for the Qalipu registration.

Hi Delores Vautier - My family entrusted Scott Garnier with 37 applications. 34 are missing and Scott Garnier will not contact us to let us know what he did with them. Do you have a similar problem? Please let me know - I am taking our concern to the Privacy Commission.

Hi Patricia Landry - Has Scott Garnier contacted you? Scott Garnier was entrusted with 37 of my family's applications. Scott Garnier "lost" 33 of these applications. In July of 2012, the 4 applications that Scott Garnier didn't lose were approved and the 33 applications that Scott Garnier "lost" were all denied (we all reapplied in 2010, after we checked with the enrolment committee to see if our applications had been processed and were told that they had no record of them).

Glad people are coming forward for these positions. It is very important that Qalipu think hard about what they want from their new status. Good luck to all the candidates.

Maybe if elected you can help speed up the "PROCESS", I waited over 2 years to recieve a letter from Tom Rideout that stated that I met the criteria! Now I've been told that it could take anywhere from 1 1/2 - 2 years to be added to the list in Ottawa as a Status Indian???? Something just dosen't add up. We need strong leadership, someone like you perhaps. It's just to bad I can't vote as I am still non-status.

What does he mean by traditional land use? He has the same rights as every other Newfoundlander.

Scott is referring to the traditional land use for substance by The Mi'kmaq people on this Island. This is info you won't find much about in NL's history books. You'll have to talk to families, which Scott has done for decades.

Great to hear that Scott is running for the chief position. A great guy, hard worker and really understands the process. A guy who has an eye for up coming issues that can face the band is so important.
