STEPHENVILLE — Odelle Pike says the most important issues at present in the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band council election are transparency, accountability and communications with membership.

She is intending to run for the chief of the Qalipu band in the Oct. 23 election.

Pike said that it is her intention that within 60 days of being elected she will initiate a member information line as part of member relationship management to field questions and answers through all communications methods.

Pike said band staff would be accountable to the board members and community members.

To address health issues, Pike said she would lobby for a culturally based, provincial treatment centre for drug and alcohol abuse, ensuring all members will have somewhere to go to take their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual needs into account.

Pike said currently the band has no legal option to provide members with taxation relief outside travelling to Conne River.

She would work to lobby all levels of government on the issue of taxation for all Mi’kmaq people in Newfoundland and Labrador.

If elected, Pike said she would work to ensure band programs and services are made accessible to all members and to expand the band’s educational program to reach more members.

The Humberwood Treatment Centre is a provincial inpatient addictions program located in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. This program offers services to individuals with a substance abuse and /or gambling addiction. Humberwood Centre operates from a philosophy that views the treatment of addiction from a holistic perspective. The approach addresses the individual’s physical, social, psychological and spiritual health. A treatment center presently exists on the west coast of the island. We need to begin to address the root causes of member's health and wellness related issues. Underlying causes, including, education, training and employment issues/opportunities need to be addressed. Mitigating the root causes, coupled with availing of services that already exist, will address both treatment and prevention.

There seems to be a few candidates who have decided they want the job of Chief but none seem to have the grassroots experience, voluteerism and dedication to the Aboriginal people of Newfoundland than this woman. Very impression creditials in all aspects that are needed: Business, traditions, committment to youth and Elders and generally a community person. Good luck Odelle on your journey to represent everyone not just the chosen few.

Good luck Odelle; I like your platform a lot; now go and get your vote out; having people say that they support you is good but they must vote to really make a difference!!

I'm very happy to learn that Odelle Pike will be running. I've been watching the list of candidates get longer and longer, and have worried that the election would be more about 'politics' than finding a true leader to represent the NL Aboriginal population. I have admired Odelle's contributions to NAWN and the Aboriginal community over the years. As a male Aboriginal who has been involved with the FNI for 20+ years, I would be proud to have her as our leader. She is educated, professional and has a keen understanding of the importance of maintaining positive political relationships. Out with the old boys club. In with fresh ideas, dedication to the cause and common sense!
