DEER LAKE — Frustration levels are growing among council members as there has been virtually no communication from the province concerning Crown land usage.

“We haven’t had a lot of clarity,” said Coun. Jean Young, who is also a part of the town’s economic development committee. “We’d like some information on what land is available and what land we can purchase, as well as what kinds of deals have been made in the past because we’re not totally clear on what’s happening.”

With the town’s industrial park nearing its limit, council is looking to develop other areas that are close to the town centre or the highway.

Council recently heard a proposal that could see a large business development in the canal area between Deer Lake and St. Judes, but because it would take up Crown land, Young said they need to find out if it can be built.

This is 2012 and the Town of Deer Lake hasn't yet identified the status of all lands within their municipal or town borders. Why does that not surprise me? This council has been in office for 3 years and development is being held up because council doesn't know how to proceed. Has there been no land use studies undertaken? I'd also like to know where the 'canal' is between Deer Lake and St.Judes is. Elections are just a year away and now's the time for the citizenry to give some thought to being a part of council Just a thought.
