Qalipu election: Candidate thinks election should be run better

CORNER BROOK — One of the candidates running in the first Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nations Band Council election says the process is flawed.

Ron Jesseau of Corner Brook is seeking to represent the band’s members in the Corner Brook ward when the Qalipu band votes Oct. 23.

Jesseau’s main beef with the election is that there is going to be only one polling station established on election day in each ward. That means that any member who wants to vote on election day will have to make it to the polling station at St. John the Evangelist Church Hall.

The Corner Brook ward takes in much more than Corner Brook proper. It also includes the north shore of the Bay of Islands, Pasadena, South Brook, Massey Drive, Pinchgut Lake, George’s Lake and Spruce Brook.

Jesseau said any members living on the Northern Peninsula would also have to go to Corner Brook on election day.

Jesseau figures there may be around 3,500 eligible voters spread throughout his ward.

“To give equal opportunity to all these people, there should be a ballot box in every community,” said Jesseau. “It seems to me these people are being denied the basic right to vote. They are all shareholders in the Qalipu band and it seems unfair to me.”

Qalipu members do have the option of voting in an advance poll on Oct. 17, but they would still have to get to the same church hall in Corner Brook on that day.

The other option is to participate in the vote by mail-in ballot. Jesseau has concerns about the short time available to vote by mail.

“The nominations close on Oct. 1 and the ballots don’t go to the printer until Oct. 2,” he said. “The deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot is Oct. 9, but I’m worried the office doesnt have the human resources to process all of the ballots, depending on how many that come in.”

Jesseau, a longtime advocate for aboriginal issues and injured workers, said the same problem exists in all nine of the wards established by the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nations Band.

For instance, any members living in Sop’s Arm are considered members of the Benoit’s Cove ward and must travel 165 kilometres to the that south shore of the Bay of Islands community to vote on election day. Anyone living in Burgeo must travel 183 kilometres to Flat Bay to vote.

“I’m running and it is a grievance I’ve got, but everybody who is running should have the same grievance,” he said.

Sick of this whining, a native band isn't a democracy, if you were expecting otherwise maybe you should of kept your status to yourself. Native bands have been cheiftoms since they're inception don't hop on the bandwagon and act all surprised that the conditions aren't first world. The band is overworked, because there membership quadrupled the second money was put on the table. I seriously hope that this free money never goes through.

In reference to Gerry’s comment on the Qalipu elections, maybe he should take a second look at it re-evaluate his opinions on this matter. On the point of no disclosure on the part of the now council at Qalipu, he must mean that hundreds of people lied when, they said that the people there wouldn’t tell then nothing pertaining to genealogy questions, etc. I personally have phoned, went to the office and was given no assistance on questions I asked, what so ever. With regards to the ballot box being only in the Corner Brook site and all the money it would take to distribute the boxes around the island and else ware, have he ever heard of “VOLENTEERS” who would gladly help out on this historic vote for our people. On the voting communities listed for the Corner Brook ward, tell us why was ALL of the Northern Peninsula was left out, not one community mentioned. Aren’t we worthy of such mentioning, don’t we count, I FIRMILY BELIEVE WE DO GERRY. The people have watched what went on with this band since the formation of Qalipu and don’t like it one bit. The council thought that by keeping us in the dark, they would have more power over us, but with people like Ron Jesseau making sure that the now council is held accountable, to us as Qalipu members for their mistakes in their motto of “NO DISCLOSURE”. It’s time for a change. Let’s get a new council in there to represent us, people who will keep us informed and seek our input.

We are given sign-in ID's and Passwords for most all dealings with Government including our taxes. Why not have the election done this way so that everyone is given the opportunity to vote no matter where the live.

Its not a matter of not being given an opportunity, its hiding the fact theres an election to begin with. Its only this past week that anyone has talked about the election. That gives anyone without a computer or internet no chance. From what im reading, you have to register online for a mail in ballot. Qalipu has every ones address and contact information. Why was a ballot not automatically sent to voters. Money issue maybe? Well, to that i say HA! If Qalipu cant afford to send out ballots to every member informing them of an election, were in bigger trouble than anyone thinks. Its all politics being played by those in charge right now, same in any government. They are looking for people to be divided. Stand together, talk to each other, make informed decisions, thats the only way for any people to be strong. Msit No'komaq Wela'lioq,

This is the first election for Qalipu and the challenges of pulling it off are great. There are something like 23,000 people who can vote. Hopefully many make sure that they vote. The Western Star has an important role to play in making sure that the Qalipu First Nation is aware of the election, the issues, the candidates. Ron Jesseau has a very good point. It is a little crazy to ask people to travel 100 km to be able to vote. There certainly should be more polling stations. There is still time to make sure that this happens. I presently live in BC and talked today to a First Nation woman who is from a Nation of 350 people. Good luck to Qalipu. Thanks to all the candidates who have put themselves forward. Please make sure you vote if you can

I think what Mr. Jesseau is saying is that the process is flawed. The interim chief and council set up a database for all members. In fact, it was the only community meetings they have held since the band was formed. They said it was done so they could email their members with information. They have the names, addresses, telephone numbers and occupations of all members over the age of 18. They have not sent one email to anyone. But they do have the membership lists. How convenient is that for the interim Chief and council with an election on the go. The new people running have only had access to names and ward not telephone numbers, email addresses or mailing addresses. If they had used the system the way they said they were going to, people at great distances from their polling stations could have applied for mail in ballots. Or they could have sent the application for ballots to everyone on their data base. I agree with Mr. Jesseau, unfair practices in any election gives the people in power an unfair and immoral advantage. What is wrong with campaigning on your merit, what you have done in the past, good and bad and winning because you deserve to, not because you have a leg up that other candidates don't have.

There are mail in ballots available for people who can't make it to polling stations.

The Qulipu band office appears to be ran in a similiar fashion as Deer Lake Minor Hockey. The councilers only wish to serve family and friends, with no accountability to the community.

it is a fraud. The whole membership drive is flawed. There were made |Idaians, Affadivids such as "she looked indian. ".. etc.. many coming fro Benoit's Cove. They had affidavids from anyone stating that they knew of people 150 years ago. Not possible. half of those registered are not indian and jumped on the band wagon.

Why is the process to become a member of Qalipu so slow? My family submitted a application and supporting documentation almost 6 months ago, but little or no response since. Apparently there is a backlog of applications.

Does anybody find it ironic that the Chief who sits on the enrollment committee that reviews your documents to see if you meet the criteria for registration is the same Chief who is running for election in for a ward position. How is that not a conflict of interest or unfair advantage. She already knows the names, addresses and telephone numbers of these people as part o the registration process. Shame on these people. They should have had to step away from their roles as councilors. They say they are the interim council and have to be there but the Band has a general manager and at least 5 of the interim council are not running. I am sure between them they are competent to run the band for a month. Every the acting Chief who is actually a paid employee should have to resign or step down until after the election. Every time he speaks, he is in a conflict. People associate him with the band and the election that human nature. Run a clean campaign and stand on your past behavior

WOW, What a surprise. Many things have happened since the formation of this band. There is absolutely NO disclosure on the part of anyone at Qalipu. Everything going on there is private and only for a selected few. Why were the communities in the Northern Peninsula left out of the ward listings? Everywhere else in the Corner Brook ward in mentioned. Makes myself, for one, thinks more could be going on at Qalipu than meets the eye

How much has anyone looked into this when they say "no disclosure"? I find it hard to believe that anyone who may have contacted the office with enquiries was told nothing! I would like to know where Mr. Jesseau plans to get the money required to set up polling stations in the dozens of communites in and outside the province that have members of the band residing in them. Qalipu was granted recognition as a landless band so members can live where they please. This is one of the negative aspects of that status. There are members living all across the country from Newfoundland and Labrador to British Columbia. Is it fair to include members from Sop's Arm but not Fort Mac? People are being given the opportunity to vote by mail so they are not being denied anything. I feel it will it would be a complete waste of the Band's finances to attempt such a grand election plan. Money that could be put to better use in the various programs offered by the band.
