High winds and rough seas in the Cabot Strait has forced Marine Atlantic to cancel all ferry crossings for the next 24 hours.

According to Environment Canada, winds between 35 and 65 knots, and seas as high as seven metres are expected to develop in the Gulf before diminishing early Friday morning.

Customers have been advised all afternoon and evening sailings scheduled today have been canceled and those impacted have been contacted and re-booked to tomorrows crossings.

The MV Higlanders and the commercial vessel the MV Leif Ericson is currently waiting out the system in North Sydney, N.S., while the MV Vision is tied up in Port aux Basques.

Should the weather improve, Marine Atlantic spokesman Darrell Mercer said he’s hopeful all ferries can sail as scheduled starting late Friday morning.
