George and Elaine Skinner, a fish harvesting couple at Little Port Harmon, discovered a seven- and-a-half-foot shark snarled up in their herring net just two minutes off Stephenville Beach in St. George’s Bay on Monday morning.

The shark was dead at the time and had chewed up the net beyond future use.

George estimated it to be about 450 pounds and it was in about seven fathoms of water when it went into the net. It’s the first shark he was aware of to have been caught in St. George’s Bay.
