PICCADILLY — A 29-year-old man from the Piccadilly area is dead as the result of an accident on a dirt bike shortly after midnight on Thursday.

Members of the Bay St. George RCMP responded to a report that an off road vehicle was involved in a single-vehicle accident in Piccadilly and the lone occupant was injured.

The man died from his injuries at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville.

Members of the RCMP vehicle collison reconstruction unit, traffic services and the Bay St. George Detachment were continuing the investigation on Thursday.

The preliminary investigation suggested the dirt bike was being driven on the main road (Route 463), went off onto the shoulder and then over a steep embankment.

The cause of the collision was still unknown on Thursday afternoon and police are encouraging any witnesses or people with knowledge to contact the RCMP with any information they may have.

The RCMP remind the public that all-terrain vehicles and off-road vehicles are prohibited from being operated on roads and highways.

Police remind people to contact their local detachment or call crimestoppers to report such incidents to the police.
