CORNER BROOK — Western Memorial Regional Hospital may have had to wait four days, but its first newborn of 2013 didn’t take long to arrive when he decided it was time.

Pam Van Horn of Burgeo was at a shopping mall in Corner Brook at around 1 p.m. Friday.

A little more than two hours later, she was holding Carson, the second son for Van Horn and her husband Kelly. The seven-pound, 11-ounce baby is a little brother to five-year-old Emerson.

Van Horn wasn’t due until Jan. 17.

“I was amazed and thought the nurses at the front desk were kidding me when I walked in because she had it so fast,” said Kelly, who missed the delivery.

Emerson came nine days early himself, but Van Horn’s labour was longer the first time around.

“We had a lot longer prep time for him because I was in labour 17- and one-half hours with Emerson,” said the proud mom who got to leave the hospital Saturday afternoon.

The Van Horn’s were both expecting another lengthy labour.

“I thought it would be the wee hours of the morning before she has him and I had some people coming to pick up Emerson, so I was just going to leisurely come up and get settled in and wait for this baby to come,” said Kelly, a project manager who splits his time between working on the oil rigs in his native Alberta and the couple’s home in Burgeo.
