CORNER BROOK — The man charged with starting a fire at a residence in Mount Moriah in December has been denied bail.

Jason John Peddle, 34, of Corner Brook has been in custody since his arrest Dec. 10 in relation to the fire that happened two days prior.

A bail hearing had commenced after his arrest, but had to be stopped when the court deemed it necessary for Peddle to be assessed further.

The bail hearing was finally concluded in provincial court Tuesday. Later in the day, Judge Wayne Gorman ruled that Peddle should be kept in custody until his matters have been fully dealt with.

Duty counsel Lynn Cole, who represented Peddle at the bail hearing, said Peddle still has to apply for representation by legal aid.

His next court appearance was set for Jan. 15 for an update on his efforts to retain legal representation.
