CORNER BROOK  Some areas of Corner Brook are reported to still be without power, as hydro crews work to correct generation issues at the Holyrood Generating Station.

Drivers were lined up at the gas station in Steadybrook on Friday, one of the few service stations in Western Newfoundland that was open during a near province-wide power outage.

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro says that while power has been restored to much of the island, including the majority of the west coast, central and the Northern Peninsula, that many electricity consumers on the Avalon Peninsula are still experiencing outages.

Hydro advises customers to reduce energy consumption by unplugging unnecessary appliances, turning down thermostats and refraining from using appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines until notified that the power system has been stabilized.

For emergencies and safety issues, contact Hydro at 1-888-737-1296.

Meanwhile, the outage in Corner Brook has affected households, businesses, government offices and educational facilities.

Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland has been closed for the day and all schools in Corner Brook under the Western School District will also remain closed.
