CORNER BROOK — A 17-year-old boy from Corner Brook charged with uttering threats and extortion, among other offences, will learn today if he will be released or remain in custody until his matters are dealt with.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary received a complaint from a Massey Drive couple on the afternoon of Jan. 10 that their vehicle had been taken without their consent. They also reported that the person responsible for taking the vehicle threatened to damage it if a sum of money was not paid to him.

It’s also alleged the accused assaulted the owner of the vehicle after he had returned it to him. The vehicle was not damaged in the incident.

The boy was arrested the following afternoon and charged with assault, theft of a motor vehicle, extortion, uttering threats and breaching court orders.

He made a court appearance via tele-conference Saturday, and was remanded for a court appearance Monday.

A bail hearing was conducted Monday and the judge’s decision on whether or not to release the teenager is scheduled for this afternoon.
