A 28-year-old off-duty volunteer firefighter was arrested early Wednesday morning in Sheshatshiu after a fire truck was stolen from the department in that community.
The accused was charged with impaired driving after his blood-alcohol level was found to be more than twice the legal limit.
RCMP in Sheshatshiu say they responded to a call about 12:30 a.m. that the truck had been stolen.
Officers made immediate patrols and located the fire truck being driven on Tsheniss Drive near the school. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver fled on foot. He was apprehended within minutes.
Charges include theft of a motor vehicle, impaired driving, resisting/obstructing a police officer and driving without a valid driver's licence.
A court date has been set for Feb. 27 at provincial court in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The truck was not damaged and was returned to the fire chief a short time later.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
