A 28-year-old man is facing numerous charges — including aggravated assault on a woman — following a six-hour standoff at a home in Hopedale, Labrador that ended early this morning.

The 24-year-old woman, who was able to flee the residence to a neighbour’s home, was “severely assaulted”, say the RCMP, and taken to the clinic for treatment.

RCMP received the call just before midnight Thursday that the suspect was intoxicated and held up in the residence with a firearm.

The RCMP contained the scene and after six hours of negotiations, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody.

In addition to aggravated assault, the accused is charged with pointing a firearm, uttering threats and numerous breaches of court orders.

He will appear in provincial court later today.

The victim of the assault is in serious but stable condition and is en route to Happy Valley/Goose Bay on a Medivac.

The investigation into this incident is on-going at this time.
